Cover version contest – Mercury Rev vs Sly and the Family Stone

Congratulations to last weeks winner, Suzanne Vega, who wiped the floor with junkie pin-up Evan Dando and his Lemonheads.

I asked Suzanne Vega for her reaction to this success, she said:

The current scoreboard reads thus:

This week we feature the Dave Baker-tastic Mercury Rev covering Sly & The Family Stone’s “If you want me to stay”. Β  Red Hot Chili Peppers also covered this but Mercury Rev back then were awesome.Β  No videos so you’ll have to look at the picture of a naked woman in a perspex dish and some guy in an afro suspended in mid-air.

  1. Gotta go with Sly. I grew up listening to a lot of that kind of funk-soul-rock music. Ohio Players, yo.

  2. Again, gotta go with the classic.
Mercury Rev sounds like they’re trying to be cool.
    Sly is cool.
    Nuff said.

  3. I didn’t vote. There were some things I liked and disliked about each. Sorry.

  4. I picked Sly. But I was a little disappointed my old boyfriend, Anthony, and his band wasn’t an option.

    • Oh yes of course, I supose I could have done 3.

I’m losing this challenge every week, I need to pick a terrible song that someone covering it can only improve

  5. White guys trying to sound black or a black guy just being, I’m going with my homeboy Sly.

  6. I’ve got the perfect song where the cover will probably beat the original.
    Unless the game is rigged.

I’ve never heard Mercury Rev but they were really fun. I kind of feel like getting smooshed now….hmmm.

P.S damn! why am I just not noticing these vs. post! Now I have to go read everyone of them;)

    • Their first two albums were great, others ok, but once one of their singers left they toook themselves too seriously
